From what you've said this guy sounds like a total jerk tbh. With you getting more confidence over the holidays, maybe he started to notice you (at last) but if he liked you I don't think he would've avoided you in the first place. He probably likes the feeling that he's got some kind of power over you, like sitting next to you. And maybe you've started liking him again just because he's showing more interest (I know that from experience). I think you could find someone a whole lot better who won't be a jerk.
