Coursework
Ok well first of all I gotta do a original writing piece any ideas what I could do? Except an autobiography?
Second of all this is my Romeo + Juliet essay on Act 1 Scene 5, you prob cant be assed to read it but if anyone does is it good enough? I'm top set english, contrustive or just plain critasism(sp) please
Romeo & Juliet Essay
Act 1 Scene 5 is an important scene in the play because it is when Romeo and Juliet meet, Romeo snuck into the Capulets party to see Juliet, but he doesn’t know that Juliet is a Capulet, in this scene, Romeo realises he doesn’t love Rosaline anymore and likes Juliet. They get the chance to see each other and this is when they kiss. It is an enjoyable scene to watch because of all the secrecy between Romeo and Juliet and the romance in it. Before this scene we learn quite abit about both Romeo and Juliet. We learn that Romeo is older than Juliet, good reputation in Verona, quiet one amongst rowdy friends, romantic boy, believes in stars and fate, impetuous – acts without thinking. Juliet appears to be young/innocent, obedient, good mannered, only daughter of rich Capulets, not much to do with opposite sex.
The scene opens with lots of servants that are getting the Capulets party ready, serving the food. There is lots of humour at this stage, for example Lord Capulet says ‘Welcome, gentlemen! Ladies that have their toes unplagued with corns will walk a bout with you’ this shows that he is in a good mood. The mood in the Capulet household is a good one because there is a party going on; everyone is in the party spirit, music playing and everyone is dancing.
Tybalt realises Romeo is at the party ‘This, by voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy’ he wants to kill Romeo. But Capulet does not get upset, he gives Tybalt three reasons to why he does not object to Romeo being there; ‘Content thee, gentle coz, let him alone, ‘a bears him like a portly gentleman; to be a virtuous and well-governed youth. I would not for the wealth of all the town here in my house do him disparagement; therefore be patient, take no note of him; it is my will, the which if thou respect, show a fair presence, and put off these frowns, an ill-beseeming semblance for a feast’ what Lord Capulet is telling Tybalt, is to be calm and bear him like a well mannered gentleman, to be virtuous and a responsible youth, here in his house do not disrespect, show good manners and put off these frowns. But then he looses his temper with Tybalt; ‘He shall be endured. What, Goodman boy, I say shall, go to! Am I the master here, or you? Go to! You’ll not endure him? God shall mend my soul, you’ll make a mutiny among my guests! You will set cock-a-hoop! You’ll be the man!’ He says this because Tybalt does not agree with Romeo being there because he hates him and wants to kill him.
The reason why Romeo goes to the party is because he feels as though he must see Juliet. You can tell Juliet has an effect on Romeo from as soon as he sees her, we see this from when he says ‘What lady’s that which doth enrich the hand of yonder knight?’ he also compares her to ‘a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear - beauty too rich for earth too dear: So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, as a yonder lady o’er her fellows shows. The measure done, I’ll watch her place of strand, and touching her, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night’ When Romeo says ‘Did my heart love till now?’ He means he didn’t ever love Rosaline in the same way. If I were Romeo I would speak in a quite romantic toned voice, and move elegantly around the stage to show how love struck I was. When Romeo and Juliet come together you can tell how much they have fallen for each other. They speak about their growing love for each other and the fact that they want to kiss. They speak in sonnet. The Juliet we see now is different from the Juliet we saw earlier: then she was quiet, not showing interest in boys, now she is louder and showing a lot of interest in Romeo.
Juliet is interrupted by the nurse calling her as her mother wishes a word with her so she has to rush off. Romeo then asks the nurse who her mother is; this is when the nurse tells Romeo what Juliet’s mother is the lady of the house. Romeo is now distraught saying ‘Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt’ this means his life is at mercy of his enemy. Romeo leaves the party after this after being called away with his mates. Juliet then speaks with the nurse asking who the gentleman was, ‘Go ask his name ‘ If he be married, my grave is like to be my wedding bed’ the nurse returns saying ‘His name is Romeo, and a Montague, the only son of your great enemy’ Juliet is now also distraught saying ‘My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, that I must love a loathed enemy’ by saying this she means that the man she is supposed to love she has fallen in love with. Juliet then gets called away, the scene ended with both Romeo and Juliet being called away, this seems to happen a lot for these two, In my opinion this is like saying that the two shouldn’t be together but they are star-struck.
I feel this scene is important to the play because it starts off the story, there is tragedy in this scene which is one of the first scenes, so obviously there are more tragedies to follow. I liked this scene because of the mixture of secrecy, hate, upset and happiness all in one. I liked that in the newer version how they were looking at each other through the water, they used the feature of water a lot in the play. The music adds a lot to the scene as it betrays the mood. If I was the director I wouldn’t change anything because I feel they did it all right and set a good picture for the viewer/reader.

For my creative writing piece I believe I did a story, as I am most probably on a different exam board, and it was called original writing.
Your Shakespeare essay looks good and well structured, can't offer advice without having seen/read it. I did Taming of the Shrew for my essay.
Ps. You doing your GCSEs, it seems a little late for coursework?

Good, nothing better than someone who is capable of turning it all around .
I have some suggestions on your essay:
Make sure you say how things relate to themes, development of the characters etc. Spark Notes can help with this sort of stuff http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/romeojuliet/ , if you haven't already read them, I advise you too.
Anyway, Good luck.

Yeah, I tried to do the devolopment of the character and how it relates to other parts in the film ect, but because the essay was only on Act 1 Scene 5 I only had notes on that so it was kinda hard, I did my best though, I've emailed it to my teacher so hopefully he will mark it and email me back with what I need to change, he helps me and hopefully I should get a B hopefully, I will be pretty amazed if I do!
Thanks for the help, I will check that site out.

I wouldn't expect him to be, the walking dead are never the most reasonable people. (No I'm not sure whether that was meant to be a joke or not either.)

Not Media Studies . It was in the same option block as ICT for me, and there was nothing else. I now hate ICT with a passion, and wished I had done media, as there is less coursework and I do better in my exams. This concludes my life story.

Hmmm, you seem to retell the story quite a bit.

Well done Ruby, I'll print this and add any changes you might need,
hopefully that wont take you long when we're back. Good luck with the
rest. Remember, now you're on a roll we should change that target grade to
A/B although I know that just getting a C is our lowest target!

Ahh congrats
@ assa'daah - At this level it is considered having a firm understanding of the plot. It's a perfectly acceptable way of laying it out in my opinion.
