The Mean

Example:

Four tests results: 15, 18, 22, 20
The sum is: 75
Divide 75 by 4: 18.75

The 'Mean' (Average) is 18.75

(Often rounded to 19)

The Median
The Median is the 'middle value' in your list. When the totals of the list are odd, the median is the middle entry in the list after sorting the list into increasing order. When the totals of the list are even, the median is equal to the sum of the two middle (after sorting the list into increasing order) numbers divided by two. Thus, remember to line up your values, the middle number is the median! Be sure to remember the odd and even rule.

Examples:

Find the Median of: 9, 3, 44, 17, 15 (Odd amount of numbers)
Line up your numbers: 3, 9, 15, 17, 44 (smallest to largest)
The Median is: 15 (The number in the middle)

Find the Median of: 8, 3, 44, 17, 12, 6 (Even amount of numbers)
Line up your numbers: 3, 6, 8, 12, 17, 44
Add the 2 middles numbers and divide by 2: 8 12 = 20 ÷ 2 = 10
The Median is 10.

The Mode

The mode in a list of numbers refers to the list of numbers that occur most frequently. A trick to remember this one is to remember that mode starts with the same first two letters that most does. Most frequently - Mode. You'll never forget that one!

Examples:

Find the mode of:
9, 3, 3, 44, 17 , 17, 44, 15, 15, 15, 27, 40, 8,
Put the numbers is order for ease:
3, 3, 8, 9, 15, 15, 15, 17, 17, 27, 40, 44, 44,
The Mode is 15 (15 occurs the most at 3 times)

*It is important to note that there can be more than one mode and if no number occurs more than once in the set, then there is no mode for that set of numbers.

Mean.

How ever many numbers you are trying to find the mean of e.g

1 2 3 4 5

Add them together

1+2+3+4+5 = 15

15 divided by 5 ('cus there is 5 numbers) = 3

The mean for those set of numbers is 3 :]

The median

You have a set of numbers e.g

4 5 2 5 7 1 3 5 6

Put them in order

1 2 3 4 5 5 5 6 7

The middle number = 5

Median = 5

You know mode right?

Median - The middle on when they're in order
(1,2,3,4,5,6,7. Median = 4)
Mean - The average. Add them all together and divide by the number there was.
(Eg - 2,5,7 = 2+5+7 divided by 3)
Mode - The one that is most common
(E-g 1,1,2,3,5,1,1,4,5,1,1,54,76,7,1,1,1. Mode = 1)

If you can't remember how to work out the mean look at the formula:



The symbol at the beginning which looks like an x with a dash above it symbolises the mean and it is telling us how to work it out. The large symbol in the middle is the summation and this is telling us to add up all the values in the sum. The little x with the i next to it is each individual value in the sum and it is these values which we add up. The n above the summation symbol is the number of observations in the sum, and it is this number which we use to divide the total number of each individual value once they have all been added up.

I can't remember the formula for the median, but it is just as simple. If you have an odd set of numbers = 5, 2, 1, 3, 4 you order them into numerical order so it becomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and thus 3 is the median because it is the middle number. If you have an even set of numbers, take the two middle numbers and work out the mean to find the median.

Mediun - Sounds like medium so obv the medium number in the middle.
Mean - Its mean cause you have to add al the numbers up and divide by how many there is.
