The Dark Knight
I'm not putting this in spoiler tags because the thread title pretty much suggests what this is going to be about and if people want to open it up then that's their choice.
So, has anyone seen it yet? I booked tickets so I could see it on the release night because I'd pretty much been waiting to see it since I saw Batman Begins. I fucking loved it, not only is it one of the best films I've seen this year, it's probably one of the best film I've ever seen. This is purely because it has all the ingredients to make it an incredible movie and one that people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy.
Christian Bale was brilliant and I still believe he is the Batman to date. No-one is suited to the role better than him and when he portrays Bruce Wayne/Batman, it seems so natural to him. However, Batman was completely out of his depth in this film because of the Joker and that is why this film is much better than any of the others - the Joker wins in the end as it shows that in Gotham City, evil will still prevail over good. Batman loses and that is why he has no option but to blame himself for the murders Dent commited.
The Joker is an incredible character and he is by far one of the best villians I have ever seen in a film. He's not your typical run-off-the-mill villian as he encompasses a vast range of characteristics that make him stand out from the others: he's clever, calculated, methodical, murderous, evil and twisted and that is why Batman is out of his depth. Everything the Joker does, from making a pencil dissapear into a bodyguard's forehead, laughing like a maniac and the things he says, are amazing. You would need an expectionally talented actor to pull all that off and Ledger done that beautifully. I'm getting annoyed at people who are saying Ledger is only getting praise because he's dead but that's complete bullshit. If anyone actually bothers to go and see the movie, you'll see Ledger put in one of the best performances he has ever done and that the praise he is getting is justified, regardless of his death.
One more character I'd like to make mention off and that is Harvey Dent/Two-face. Aaron Eckhart portrayed him brilliantly and the burnt side of his face was quite terrifying, to be honest. I thought the movie would end there and he'd be the villian in the next movie but that is now impossible seeing as he is now dead, so maybe that means the Penguin will be the villain in the next movie? Anyhow, I thought that Dent's role was good in that it showed that even good people in Gotham city, the real heroes, can be corrupted by evil (the Joker) and that if you don't play your cards right (see what I did there?!) you will end up a villian.
Overall, the film is five-star viewing. You have a wide range of excellent characters, incredible action sequences and a radically different storyline and twist from the other Batman and superhero movies as the baddy wins in the end (the Joker over Gotham City) and Batman winning over the Joker (as Batman is truly incorruptable towards the Joker, unlike Harvey Dent) but at the same time, neither of them are defeated.

I was wondering when this movie would come out in the UK. I saw it July 19th and it was amazing. The Joker was so creepy and even though I didn’t want to laugh, I did anyway because it was macabre funny and then I felt bad afterward. The pencil trick, yikes. And Aaron Eckhart did a damn fine job as Harvey Dent/Two-Face as did Heath as the Joker. Christian Bale was good too, but the Batman voice got a little over bearing at times. Half the time I was like, “What the frick did he just say?” His monstery voice was really different in this one than Begins. I’m going to see it again this weekend. Ohhh yeah!

Yeah, I totally agree with you about the voice Batman puts on, it's well difficult to fathom out what he says half the time.

I went to see it and it was amazing! I remember when I heard about Batman Begins being made I was really sceptical because I loved the Tim Burton ones so much, but Begins and Dark Knight especially are just so dark and fantastic.
(Spoiler)I definately agree about the merit of Batman not being able to defeat the villain, but I think a lot of the darkness also comes from the complexity of the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman. In Dark Knight I think you really get a sense of what Bruce Wayne is having to struggle with, and the tragedy of a man who's never more complete than when he's dressed up as a giant bat.
I thought Rachel's death was amazing, and I was absolutely gutted when Batman realised that he'd arrived at where Dent was rather than her, but throughout the rest of the film I was expecting a revelation that she wasn't actually dead. I really felt sorry for Batman when Dent was talking about having lost her towards the end and wallowing in self pity, when Bruce Wayne had lost exactly the same thing. And how fucking scary was Two-Face - although he was horrific I couldn't stop looking at his face whenever he was on screen. Urgh. I completely wasn't expecting anything so creepy when he turned his face to show his burns. And the eye. *shudder*
One thing that did disappoint me slightly was the Joker, but I think that's mostly because of all the hype surrounding it and I expected something more memorable. I didn't think there was anything wrong with him - in fact, I think he was excellent - it's just that I think that the spotlight's unfairly been focussed on his character, when it really should have been on the development of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Oh and why was the Scarecrow in it at the beginning? I didn't really understand that.
Anyhow, that's pretty much everything. I'm really excited about the next one now!

Scarecrow was in the beginning because in "Batman Begins" he escaped from Arkam Asylum and now he's running the drug trade in "The Dark Knight." Then Batman gets wind of it and "punches" them down.

Christian Bale's and Heath Ledger's acting really made this film what it is, in my opinion. They suited the characters so well it seemed almost natural. I wondered whether this might seem a tad too long, but it was awesome. I was so engrosed in it, I forgot to even open my drink and my friend still had half a bag of pocorn left... and it was the third time she'd seen it. Haha
5 stars for sure, probably the best film I'll see this Summer.
(Spoiler)When Bruce went to rescue Rachel, and it turned out that the joker had switched the addresses, it was one of them moments I just though: 'Corr I should have seen that coming.' Her death was really well done. I liked the ending as well, how it didn't 'finish' as such, but closed the story for now by calling Batman the 'Dark Knight'. I liked how The Joker and Batman were seen as almost even, like one can't survive without the other.

I want to see this so sooo much!! It's actually the first film that's been out in years that I've really wanted to go and spend money watching.
I really hope that the Penguin is the villian in the next one. I think that'd be fab!

wow I really loved this film. I was a fan of Heath Ledger for a while, (especially in A Knight's Tale =]), but I think his best performance was definitely the Joker. The whole story line was amazing, and I thought the part with the people on the ferries was genius. It's definitely a five-star movie and I haven't heard one complaint about it.

Saw this as the cinema, and enjoyed every minute of it. It was definitely worth my bum going numb, for the length of time it was on.
Agree with Kirstie and Becky about Rachel's death 100% The fact that I was so disturbed, shocked and disappointed showed myself just how involved I got with the film.
Heath Ledger's performance definitely made the film for me. The darkness and creepyness of The Joker sent a shiver down my spine. I LOVED the "I'm gonna make this pencil disappear" scene had me laughing for ages.
The only bad thing I could find with the film was Batman's gruff voice, which at times was hard to understand. Other than that, definitely a film worth watching again.

I saw this again the other day with my friend (who has seen it 15 times now), his girlfriend (who has seen it 5 times) and my other friend who just saw it for the first time. We all loved it, no matter if some of them have seen it dozens of times, the brilliance of it will never cease.

15 times?! Overkill, even though it is very good. Damn, can't say I've even managed to see my favourite move more than 10 times yet over the years. :\
