Default new boy - ballet

Hi

I've just joined today. I'm aged 16 and love doing ballet. I've passed my Imperial ballet exams up to grade 4, and now I' doing grade 5.

I know it's unusual for a boy to do ballet, but my Mum has always been keen for me to dance, and I guess it's spread to me. The problem is that I'm the only boy in the Dance School, and have to wear a leotard and tights the same as the girls. It's so embarrasing!!!

The Dance School provide a regulation uniform - black leotard and pink tights, which has to be worn at all times, and they don't see any problem. I also have to wear the same for the exams. Mum thinks it's great fun and loves talking to the other mums in the changing room. They all offer me a lot of encouragement. Is it any wonder there are no other boys in the School!!

I'm now starting to do pointe work, which I don't think is for boys. Some of the movements are so effeminate, that I go bright red.

Can anybody please help?? Should I be giving it up?? I'm now the oldest in the class.

Thanks

Robert

Why not go into a more manly type of dancing, like street.

Hi Bliss

Thanks you for your reply.

I quietly enjoy the feminine side of ballet, but I'm embarrassed about it - especially having to wear the same as the girls. Another problem is that it's all confusing for me!! I enjoy being a boy and I want to be a boy, but I also enjoy ballet and being a bit like a girl. Can you understand that? It enables me to access both sides of my personality, but where does that leave me? I wish I didn't have the dilema!!

The main problem is my relationships with other boys. Once they know that I do ballet - that sems to be the end. Should I keep it secret that I do ballet? That seems to be reasonable, or is it? I don't really like keeping secrets - I can hardly keep an important part of myself away from my friends.

Help!!!!

Robert

just be yourself. You'll find friends that accept you and your hobby.

Can you talk to the teacher about a male version of the uniform? Just mention you were thinking about it, and ask her to take it into consideration.

I think its plenty fine to enjoy doing both "masculine" and "feminine" things. Every person has both of those qualities.
