Do teenagers want to be green?
Hi all,
I work for a television company and am researching how today's teenagers can be 'switched' onto the theme of becoming more green.
Now - whether climate change is happening or not, is not in question - pretty much all the evidence points towards the fact it is. See here for UN report on the matter:
IPCC Fourth Assessment Report - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have a few questions:
- Do most of your friends and family believe in climate change? Do you?
- What would make you become more green?
- Which celebrities might influence you on the matter?
- How far would you go to be green? What would(n't) you give up?
I'd be interested to know what you think...

- Do most of your friends and family believe in climate change? Do you? I don't know a lot about this, but I do believe there is a rise in the overall climate.
- What would make you become more green?
Easier ways really. Its too easy to be a wasting slob.
- Which celebrities might influence you on the matter?
Celebritities have lots of money. They can afford things like green cars, greener ways of energy, etc. Going green doesn't have to be hard, but it can be a dramatic lifestyle change for some people. I think it helps knowing that even people with lots of money who can afford high gas prices, etc. are willing to step up to the plate and change their lifestyles for the better.
- How far would you go to be green? What would(n't) you give up?
I have a hard time giving up paper towel, lol. I don't use it a lot, but when I'm traveling its so much easier. I rarely use the plastic bags from the store anymore. And I now shut my computer off everynight to save energy..

I'm too lazy, and I know it's a terrible excuse, but there you have it. In fact, it's probably my biggest problem with regard to every aspect of life. From talking to my friends, I'd imagine laziness is the biggest thing stopping them from being 'green'.
Having said that, I probably am becoming more aware of when I'm wasting energy because of the increasing cost of it. Take for example the price of petrol at the moment - I really begrudge paying £1.17 a litre for it, so if the distance is under a couple of miles and I'm not in a hurry, I'll walk it.

The truth is, we're all far too young to care about it.
It's a security blanket knowing the true statistics of how long it's going to actually affect us so we're like lol fk it.

Well, here we have to sort our rubbish out into 3 bins and 2 boxes.
So that's garden waste in one, plastic and cardboard in another, general waste in the other bin, then it's paper in one box, and tins and glass in the other box. So that's recycling.
Then well I just make sure my monitor turns off if i'm not using the computer after a while .

But like.. we aren't too young to care. We SHOULD care, because we can make the most difference. Sure, you could play the ignorance card, or the I don't care card, but its not because we are too young. 50 year olds can still do a lot to help the planet, but they can play the same cards too.
I'm guilty in ways, but I still think, even if we don't directly see the affect, its still a GREAT thing to do because we know what the effects will be.

Don't get me wrong... resources and the health of the planet are paramount to this shitholes future prelonging... And we should consider that daily, but the fact not everyones 'on it' on full blow just shows how distinctive our carelessness is.
it's effort man.... well and truely, undeniablely a 'world effort' from industries and us... But you may think, yeah we should, but you must not realise the selfishnesses of nations and us, coz really like you said... within proper direction full on, as in, not affecting us here and now, we put it off.
It's reflective to like homework.. you know it has to be done, but you'll put it off and leave it to the last minute.
To be honest, I do fuck all, but I don;t feel guilty about it therefore i have no drive to contribute, and I dont feel like a cunt for it.
Realistically...

I understand that some people don't have a drive to go green. I think thats sad, but I can totally see how it happens.
.. but we don't have to go "full on" to going green. Not doing anything is really careless, but even doing something as small as taking shorter showers can really take the less out of careless. It would be impossible to expect everyone go "full on". I think there are a lot of people out there that think going green means only buying organic, never using ANY disposable products, and biking everywhere. The thought of it is so discouraging, so many people neglect to make little steps.

Well, despite sitting day to day about our existance, look up to space and think 'lol whut up der den', I often think that the money we spunk on space exploration can easily go towards functioning our own planet first beore wandering off to 'hopefully' find new resources out there.
Ah well.
What happens, happens.

I dispute climate change, at least the causes of it.. but that is besides the point. Teens are going more green mostly because they are influenced by celebrities. Which is great, its nice to be active and want to do something for the greater good. But most teens won't look beyond what their favourite celeb is saying to get all of the facts and make the choice for themselves. So all you have is a large portion of society running around not knowing whats going on, and possibly doing more harm than good. I think if more teens actually thought for themselves, its possible less of them would be so 'green'.

Lol, celebrities don't influence anyone, certainly not on environmental issues.
Why do you dispute climate change? I'd love to hear your reasons and argument. Hit me with your best fucking shot.

Celebs influence alot, you would be surprised. Faith in the independent minds of teens and most adults is misplaced.
And I don't dispute it, as so much I dispute the reasons of why it is happening. All these popular quacks like Al Gore or David Suzuki, the latter actually having real scientific credentials, blame humanity for climate changes. Most people I have talked to, obviously I cannot vouch for anyone on here, agree with this. It is the human eco-footprint that is causing the world's climate to change. While its actually proven that yes, our carbon output has an effect on the climate, it is so miniscule that it is hardly worth the effort to look at.
Our world is and always has been a changing one, with shifts between ice ages and warm periods throughout the 3.8 or so billion years it has had an atmosphere. All of recorded human history has happened in a warm period, and now the cycle is moving along and it is going to get very cold again. Of course, most people do not realise this because like I said, recorded history has only been within this warm period, we wouldn't have a record of it, minus the Little Ice Age and medival warming period.
I don't blame humanity for our world moving along its own cycle, we are just along for the ride, remember. We are a pretty destructive s | |
