The fact that I was taking the anti-deps made me even more depressed, there are numerous other treatments that actually solve the problem rather than just patch it up for the time being.

I thought they worked for me. They had to up my dosage 3 times, but eventually over the years, I became less depressed. It could have been due to a variety of factors in combination with the meds though.

I find talking is one of the best cures around, whether its with a friend or a counsellor, heck.. even Samaritans can be a great help.
I think medication should only really be used in more extreme circumstances. Anti depressants work, but they shouldn't be the only method used I don't think.

I agree but ended up doing too many sit ups and it gave me friction burns and then I lost weight and got told off about it.

Temporary medication and therapy are the best combination. It helped me alot. I don't think I would be here if I hadn't been put on Effexor.

I can't really give an opinion because I have never had depression, but I would probably say therapy is the best way to treat depression.
Medicine, depending on what you suffer from, can either mask your illness or completely cure it. Take Calpol for example, that only masks the pain until your immune system fixes it. But I think if you have an illness such as depression, it is mainly something that is making you depressed, and it is better to talk to someone about it to get down to the problem that is making you depressed, rather than taking medicine which is a temporary relief to the problem that will always remain unless you speak to a professional.

One of my friends is really low, she's been on anti-deps before, but she's too stubborn to admit that she needs help again.
Talking if possible, or something to take their mind of it.

Anti-depressants can really be effective for some people and won't make the slightest difference for others. I still think they would be worth a try to someone who was suffering severly with depression. But IMO the best thing to do is talk to someone. It doesnt have to be a professional. Just someone you trust and feel comfortable with. Confronting and working on solving whatever is depressing you is the only way to solve it long term. Medication might help ease the pain but deep down the problem is still there.

I think the main problem I have with them is I feel it's a case of 'I feel a bit down' 'here pop a pill'. At least with me it was, other avenues weren't thoroughly persued beforehand. Maybe my personal experience is tainting my opinion but I'm not a fan.

^ I see where you are coming from but if they genuinly help some people I guess you can't really write them off completely.

I spent about 3 years trying to fight the "I'm just a bit down" every single day. When I finally broke, and told my mom to either send me to a hospital or take me to a doctor, having those pills to help me just get through the day were a blessing. I don't take them anymore, and infact I stopped taking them after 9 months, but in conjunction with the medication, I had weekly meetings with my doctor to talk about what I felt was causing the problem.
I swear by therapy and the temporary use of medication depression can be treated.

Yeah, my treatment sounds uncannily similar to yours, but I cant say I feel it benefited me at all, it just goes to show how individual each case is I suppose.

I honestly feel its each person's REAL desire to get help. If you REALLY are actively trying to get better, and help yourself then all will go well. If you have reservations, or feel forced into it, you won't work as hard.
My motto is if you can't/won't help yourself, why should someone/something else?
This isn't to say that you didn't try Bliss... but depression is a dark thing that can really alter how you think and act.

Oh no, I couldn't agree with you more. I went from putting my everything into getting better to realising how hard it was and giving up and withdrawing into myself. In the end I got fed up of that and pulled myself through meds free, I think you have to really want to and have the hell of alot of energy to overcome depression, but ultimately only you can really help you.

Buck up, you Prozac people | India Knight - Times Online
i think she's spot on. it's over diagnosed, most 'depression' is just a normal part of life you have to deal with. and she's totally right about talking costing more than pills.
