Default What would help you stop smoking?

Anti-smoking measures including a ban on vending machines are being proposed by the government. Will these measures stop young people smoking?

Put them all in the room, then they can choke on the smoke.

Make them smoke 20 and then eat the butts.

That apparently works.

^ Yeah, I've hear stories when my mates were kids and they got caught smoking, the 'rents would make them smoke 20 1 after another in front of them.

Michelle, I think that if you banned them all together, it wouldn't make any difference, like weed, more people smoke weed than fags 'spec teenagers, tell them not to do it and they'll do it ten times over, yano?

Ususally it stems back to the reason for smoking, and it's probably that which needs tackling.

The smoking 20 and eating the butts sounds fucking rank though.

I don't know.
Put the prices up by a few more quid (They'd be made illegally), ban it in public fullstop - even outside(It'd be hard to find people doing it) so it's hard to think of things.

Maybe just teaching children about the risks, but alot more first hand than television adverts and leaflets, I've seen people become so ill with things that Cancer caused, which they got via smoking. And seeing how helpless they are, and that they've realised what they've done to themselves, what used to release stress built it up to an unbearable level, what used to make them look cool made them look disgusting and unattractive, and the fact that it was their own fault. That was pretty daunting, and I'm pretty sure I'll never touch them because of it, it's frustrating that people always think 'Ah that won't be me' or 'Oh I don't care now' but when it does happen to them there's nothing they can do about it and it's all their own fault.

At the end of the day, it's their choice.

By banning them all together the governmant would lose too much money so they could never do it.

I'd say don't so much concentrate on those smoking now, but the next generation. By preventing future generations from smoking there is chance of it being cut out al together in the long run.

As a smoker, there's not really much putting you off...

"SMOKING KILLS" - so does getting hit by a bus, but I don't see warning signs plastered over double-deckers saying "GTFO THE WAY - BUSES KILL PEDESTRIANS"

As I was once told - you'll only ever quit if you want to - trying to quit for health reasons just never works.

I'm currently trying to quit simply because I'm bored of it... doesn't have the same hit it used to.

The government will never ban them. They rely on cigarette taxes to fund the NHS. Raising the prices would help to some extent, seeing as the majority of smokers come from a working class background but I don't think people will quit for that reason. Most people who are addicted or smoke a lot will still buy cigarettes, regardless of the price.

The government shouldn't ban them, but raise the smoking age to around 21, as well as raising the price of cigarettes by at least 50-75%. This way, kids don't start smoking from an early age and if they try and get older kids to buy them some, they will simply be too expensive.

However, if I was in control, I'd ban them altogether. Sure, the NHS recieves a significant amount from the taxation of cigarettes (which is probably paying for smoking related illnesses) but I'd privatise the hell out of the NHS. We need an NHS that is self-sustaining, not one that purely relies on tax. Then again, the problems with the NHS budget would not allow for a complete ban on cigarettes, privatised or not privatised.

Won't stop them. I'm still catching 13-year-olds with cigarettes even after the 18+ law.

If you raise the price? ...they simply steal them of their parents or, like happened a few months ago, they distract a newsagent whilst the others go round the back and steal a box of 200

Nicotine is an addiction, just like heroin. Ok, it's not as addictive and it's no where near as hard... but it's an addiction all the same. Unless you WANT to give up, you won't.

Only way to truly stop people is to ban them all together and treat it like a class-A drug. Some people will still use, but the figures would be much smaller and consequences would be much higher.

To be honest, if they did that, I'd quit in a heartbeat

I really don't think that raising the already ridiculous price of cigarettes would help at all.
I think if anything, it would make it harder for the older generation to smoke, not younger.
I know it would be a good thing if the older generation stopped smoking but this was referring to the younger generation who seem to always have ways of getting money.

Maybe if the age was raised again, but that doesn't even get in the way because it's easy enough to ask somebody to buy them for you, or to buy them of somebody who sells them from home.
It'll always be a personal choice for people to quit or continue to smoke.

The government would never ban it as it makes alot of money towards NHS..but most of their patients are probably people who are suffering from cancer due to smoking..
It seriously should be considered, but there would probably always be a way for people to still get cigarettes.

I've never ever had an urge to smoke a cigarette. I don't see the attraction because it looks like a nasty habbit.
Those pics of all the tar in people's lungs is enough to put me off.

I think it depends with your social scene, for you to even consider starting to smoke.
If all your friends smoke it does have a huge impact on you because it's rather you follow the crowd or refuse to peer pressure.

Anybody I've asked, smoked because their friends did. I can honestly say its a very tempting thing to try, especially under the influence of alcohol! And when my friends smoke weed and are having a better time than me, it gets harder to say no.

It is a disgusting habbit definitely.

I don't necessarily agree with that. Pot is illegal, but I know more people who smoke pot than cigarettes. (of course this may not be true for the older generations). I think making cigarettes illegal won't make much of a difference.

Maybe, but they would just tell the government that it's all good and that teenagers like cigarettes etc.
