Default Should doctors be rewarded with bonuses?

A health trust is to pay bonuses to surgeons for particularly successful operations. Is it a good idea?

Yes. The hospital cuts discouraged a lot of people entering the medical field and so I believe it will restore trust in the NHS and it will encourage more people to become doctors and surgeons.

I see your point but I also think in the same breath; it's their job to do a good job... Cleaners don't get bonuses for doing a particularly good job hoovering.

I'm torn. not sure. Sitting on the fence.

Thats what I was thinking, surely their bonus is seeing people with a better standard of life?

Oh yes, because hoovering is exactly the same as performing open heart surgery. Of course it's their job to do a good job, but cleaning isn't the same as making a decision that may save or kill someone, that is why they deserve to be rewarded for pretty much carrying out God's work.

In that case...its a Dr's job to do a good job as well...so they shouldn't get anything extra...

I think I may have said this before, but I find it very sad that society thinks that it's necessary to reward someone for doing what they're supposed to be doing anyway. When people are doing a job, it's their responsibility to do whatever they should be doing to the best of their ability and money shouldn't be a factor that mediates that.

Don't get me wrong, I know that surgeons do a very important and very difficult job, and of course I think that they should be paid accordingly. I just find it a very grim reflection of humanity that people might only be prepared to do their best because of a monetary incentive.
