Depression
Does a diagnosis affect future work prospects etc?
And is it silly to 'go get a diagnosis'

I find the prospect of going up to a doctor like 'i think i have depression' very ...how can i describe it... self indulgent?? As if it's nothing and that saying you have depression they will just turn around and say you're wrong if that makes sense?

I don't think it's that easy.
I also don't want it to affect my career thus avoiding it more.

Goto the doctors and just tell him/her how your feeling, they might diagnose you with depression without you saying you think you have it.

Well when I went I said that I thought I might be depressed and they just asked a few questions and asked if I wanted councilling(sp?) and if I wanted them to prescribe me anti depressants

Employers can't let problems influence whether or not to employ you anymore Moosums. If you've been feeling shit for a while go to the docs, if its just a sudden down do what Jake says and wait a bit. Unless you're adament you need drugs or councelling the Doc will probably tell you to come back in a week anyway

Well it's been for a while now and college told me to go to councilling but i kinda blew it all off and i'm at a private doctor so it's really scary and it's all really shit.
I think the job prospects are the main thing stopping me from gaining help as even though they aren't supposed to judge you on it on most applications it does ask you to state if you've had a mental health problem and i think the stigma around this scares me a whole lot.

I don't have any mental illness problems anymore, but where you're supposed to disclose any previous/ current issues I have I just didn't fill it in. I suppose you could take it as lying but for me it doesn't affect how I work and is a part of my past that I'm more than happy to leave behind.

I had a warrent for my arrest the first two months of working in the house of lords. I've had friends totally make up grades for CV's and get away with it. What you're employer doesn't know, won't bother them.
Don't tell them, you'd be surprised with what you can get away with. Plus if you go counceling, it's totally confidential. Though counceling never did anything for me.
