K so a few of you might know about my step dad, he is MEGA ill with amyloidosis, he's only like 35 I think as well so it's all like WOAH and we don't really talk about it amongst the house, I don't talk to my Mom about anything anyway, this is it if anyone wants to read about it :]

Anyway, my Mom and Mark have been to the hospital like everyday for the past week and my Mom came in today and asked if I was working tomoz I said naa why and she told me that tomoz they have gotta go down to Birmingham QE and Marks gotta go on this machine or something for 6 hours and they take all his blood and do something to him then put it back in and if it doesn't work he's gotta go back on Friday and have it done again Apaz it's really dangerous, so I was wondering if anyone would explain to me what this process thing is, 'cus I'm really confused about the whole situation and my Mom doesn't like talking about it and I don't wanna ask her 'cus it's prob not the best of times n then she'll get upset and I'll get upset and aww :[

So yeah if anyone knows anything about this and could explain I would be really gratefull

Btw I'm not after any sympathy so don't be replying like 'I'm sorry to hear that'

I'm not sure but I think it's this. Apheresis

Basically, all they do is remove the blood and then separate it into all the different things that make it up, and get rid of anything that shouldn't be there (I'm assuming the excess amyloid protein or something like that?)

Do you have any other relatives that know what's going on and might be able to talk to you about it?

So his body is going to be lay there for x amount of time with no blood in?

Hmm not really, it's only like my nan and marks mom I think, but I'm not really close to them it's like an awkward subject and no one really talks about it, I try earwig when my mom is on the phone to my nan but I don't understand it

It's just the whole blood thing that's kinda grossing me out, if he is lay there for x amount of time with no blood in his body it's icky to think about

I don't see how you can survive with no blood in your body even if only for a small while o.O

I know yeah, that's what I don't understand n makes it REALLY scary I'm gonna ask Dave at work tonight, he will probably know but I don't even know how to pronounce these big words

It sounds like he's going for dialysis. Its where in a continuous stream that take the blood from the patient, run it through a machine to filter out the amphyloid (? ).. its done alot with renal disease.. or chronic kidney failure.

ah if it's dialysis I can tell ya all about it lol.
That's where (as Luuv said) your blood is pumped out into a filter, but at the same time -through another tube- blood that has just been through the filter is pumped back in.

If it's not dialysis I bet it's the same sort of system
