The only thing your missing here is that I know someone is wrong, in general they typically are.
I did not think your suggestion was more realistic. Sorry, I didn't. The reason why is because at MY prom, a girl wore a dress that was almost identical, and she had semi long hair and it was done in the same way I suggested and it looked stunning.

I think the straight look that Viki suggested would look really nice. But like people have said just experiment until you find something that you are comfortable with.
I had my prom last year and my hair was exactly how I wanted it.
