Situps
Does anyone know if doing them daily will actually promote weight loss from the abdominal area or just build up muscle?

As far as I know, it will just build up muscle. If you're overweight and do situps, you will not lose fat and muscle will build up over the fat, so that's probably best to be avoided.

If you do them regularly I think they do help build up muscle, and help loose weight when done with a healthy and balanced diet. But I'm not too good on this subject
Where's Mark when you need him!

Well I don't want muscle build up, I just want to lose a few inches in that area. I was hoping not to have to start circuit training again.

It might do some good just to strengthen your muscles abit, but I don't think you can specifically target one area for weight loss. I'm not too sure, argh xD

You can't lose weight in 'targeted' areas, its a case of just losing overall bodyfat levels. Like said previously, sit ups are an isolation muscle work out, promoting muscle gain. Obviously doing any type of exercise will help you burn calories and therefore help you lose weight, but there are far more efficient ways of doing so, IE Running Swimming Walking Cycling.
If you have 3 weeks to lose a certain amount of weight, get your determination out and do one of these high cardio vascular activities every other day, slowly progressing to daily if you're comfortable to do so. Eating a perfectly balanced diet of fruit, meats and carbohydrates will be the key to your loss. Although I'll drop you a hint, if you want to look thinner on a specific night, cut out carbohydrates completely from your diet 3 days before said night and your body will ditch water weight.

I'm pretty sure they absorb it, like bread and pasta will hold water.

If you are prone to sudden weight gain - say, three or four pounds a week or even overnight, that weight may not all be fat. You should have to ingest 10,000 calories to gain three pounds or burn 10,000 to lose three pounds in the same amount of time. As the process of combustion goes on inside the body, however, water is a byproduct, and the weight you accumulate suddenly is likely to be water. Especially if you have allergy, which creates poisons in the system, the body will react by retaining water to dilute those poisons, and the water in turn will add to your weight. Women in particular may not be able to lose weight in the week prior to their menstrual periods because this is a time when water accumulates. They should take this into consideration when they see no progress in weight management programs during that time.
