Apps ‘R’ Us

Apps ‘R’ Us is a small software house that produces bespoke software for a range of national and international clients, such as programs to operate door entry systems, shop tills, calculate job estimates and teaching aids. The company employs 24 people, to market the company, liaise with clients to analyse their needs, to produce program requirements and to write and support code.
Most of the marketing work is done through the company website.
You are new to Apps ‘R’ Us and your role is junior programmer. You are part of a team of three programmers, led by Sabrina who is an analyst-programmer. Your role is to write programs, produce documentation and any other supporting tasks as directed by Sabrina.
Sabrina has asked you to produce a document in the form of a report that will explain why the company uses Visual Programming languages instead of a non-visual language and the benefits a Visual language brings to the company. There are always disadvantages to using any programming language and these must also be discussed. Apps ‘R’ Us use mainly Visual Basic as a programming language but there are other Visual Programming languages available and Sabina has asked you to find two other languages that the company could use and discuss and compare them with Visual Basic.
The company has recently created a teaching aid called “Robot”. This program is used to teach computer science students how to create flow charts. You have to review this program and report on whether the game is user friendly and whether the help and tutorials do assist the student to learn how to create flow charts. It would also benefit the company if you could investigate another program that uses a visual environment to manipulate or generate graphics.

Tasks

1. List and describe the functions and main use of a minimum of three different programming languages that are visual programming languages. (Visual Basic is one and an other two required) (P1)

1. Provide an in-depth review of two of the above programming languages in your own words. Include the names of the languages and where they were found, the advantages and disadvantages of using these languages and the benefits of using a visual environment. (P1)

1. Select a game, and the Robot program, provided that the game has been written in a visual programming language and generates or manipulates graphics. Write a review of the game you have chosen and the robot program in your own words (what you thought about them and what they did and how they did it and did they achieve their aim). (P1)

1. Modern programmers use visual programming environments as part of your appraisal you need to explain the benefits of using a visual environment instead of a non-visual environment. (P6)

1. Create a Bibliography (a list) at the end of the assignment indicating where you got your information. If you are not sure how to create a bibliography speak to the lecturer and ask for help. Also provide a contents page ask for help if required.

All tasks must be completed to obtain a pass in this assignment and a contents page and bibliography must be included.

Criteria to be assessed
