Ry is going away for over a year to join the army and I'm a mess. He's 16 turning 17 but I thought you had to be 18 to go to war? I asked him that and he said he looked into it and you can be 16 (because of, I think) the lack of Canadian soldiers in the war in Iraq right now. So he's going overseas somewhere to do training for a few months then if he qualifies or whatevs, going to the war for a year. I asked him when this was happening and he said asap and he's registering this week. I don't know what to do without him for so long especially considering the fact I think I may be pregnant with his child (cue Bliss to jump in calling me a silly whore) or worse, what if he dies or is severely wounded? He's just sprung this on me out of nowhere just a bit ago on MSN and I don't know what to do. I can't stop crying. I begged him not to leave me and he said something like "Sorry, but you can't expect me to just throw away something I've been waiting for my entire life because of one person."

If he does then he'll be 17 by then Im guessing, he will then have to do a 13 week training course (dunno whether it's different in Canada)

But if he does volunteer then he could.

Meaning he can only join as an apprentice or reserve.

If he joins as an apprentice thats 3 months basic, then about a years training in whatever skill he decides to do. He definately wont be seeing any combat in the next coupla years....
