Get ready for the final must-see family movie of 2004 - but don't expect any feel good festive fun!
This film is more Addams family than the Waltons, more Roald Dahl than Enid Blyton, but this fantasy romp is a belter.
Its based on the first three of author Daniel Handler's Lemony Snicket talkes, all of which are fantastically funny and deliciously dark. Jim Carrey is in full scary mode as the murderous Count Olaf, guardian of the poor - but very rich - Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny.
He's unrecognisable as the homidical failed actor who tries to various ploys to get his hands on the little uns' loot.
Jim's last film was the moving, inspirational Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and if he doesn't get an oscar for that, he deserves one for this.
He's aided by a stylishly scary supporting cast including Meryl Streep as Aunt Josephine, Timothy Spall as the sweet but sappy banker Mr. Poe, and a brilliant Billy Connolly.
The look of this movie is amazing, gothic and glorious, magical and macabre. The sequel is said to be based almost exclusively on the fifth book.
Happy reading, happy viewing and Happy Christmas!
