Bad News for Johnny Depp

My favorite actor of all time Johnny Depp has actually had a bump in the road as far as his movie career. One project that I was really looking forward to see was his upcoming film Shantaram which was directed by Peter Weir. However for some reason director Peter Weir dropped off the film and now the film has no director. Shantaram which is based on a very popular novel by Gregory David Roberts was a film that Depp wanted to do for years now and was very passionate about the film. Depp even convinced Warner Brothers to pay 2 million dollars for the rights to the novel.
The story is a weird one but that doesn’t surprise me since Johnny Depp enjoys weird movies and books. The book follows a heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison and after his escapes reinvents himself as a doctor in India and winds up a gun-runner and counterfeiter who fights against Russian troops in Afghanistan. If that doesn’t sound like a really messed up story I don’t know what is however I am looking forward to it. Weir left the film after Eric Roth (the man who wrote Forrest Gump) turned in the newest draft of the script. Warner Brothers stated that Peter Weir quit the production because he interpreted the book differently than the studio and the producers involved. However, Variety states that it was Weir and Depp who had a problem agreeing on how to direct the film. There is no release date for the movie as of yet however Warner Brothers hopes to have the film start production in Spring of next year.
