Black Christmas vs. Christian Groups
Leave it up to the Christians to bitch and moan about a movie. That’s right various Christian groups are up in arms about the remake of Black Christmas which opens on Christmas Day. The Christian groups have slammed the film because they deem the film to be “offensive.”
While I think the film will probably only be average which is a shame because I really like director Glen Morgan and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, I don’t think any group should try to control what Hollywood decides to realize unless its films like Date Movie that is like pure torture to anyone with half a brain.
According to Mathew Staver who is the founder and chairman of the Liberty Counsel Christian group he says "To have a movie that emphasizes murder and mayhem at Christmas, a time of celebration and joy around the world seems to be ill founded."
The film is about a group of college students who battle a serial killer over the Christmas Holidays. While that may seem sick to some religions, this is what I say to them, don’t go see it! No one is forcing you to so just don’t see it. I think a horror movie is a little bit better than seeing a film like Bad Santa where a drunken sexist guy dressed like Santa tries to rob a mall is probably more offensive than some college kids being victimized by a serial killer over the Holidays but then again that’s just me.
Jennifer Giroux who is the co-founder of Operation Just Say Merry Christmas agrees with Staver and says "The use of religious music 'Silent Night' and the nativity set on the front porch in one scene are insensitive to Christians. It's not enough to ignore and omit Christmas, but now it has to be offended, insulted and desecrated. Our most sacred holiday, actually a holy day, is being assaulted."
Well I got news for everyone Holiday movies have been insulted for years. Think about Bad Santa, think about all those episodes of Married with Children and I am sure there are several other films and televisions shows that mock Christmas as a holiday but that’s fine because no one is telling you to watch it or believe in it. It’s trying to be quirky and reach out to a different audience. It’s not the end of the world and we need to stop trying to make everyone feel at ease because sometimes you can’t make everyone happy and that’s just life, move on and bitch about something else.
