George Lucas Claims…

that "the Blockbuster is Dead." Personally I think he’s wrong because movies like Harry Potter, Spiderman, X-Men and movies to that degree still make a lot of money at the box office. The problem with Blockbusters is the fact that there are too many of them and so many of them are terrible.
George Lucas thinks that because Blockbusters don’t win Academy Awards that they are dying. They don’t win awards because they are big budget and don’t have much substance. I mean “Crash” which just won Best Picture at the Academy Awards is a wonderful film that is realistic and was almost impossible to be made because they had several money issues with trying to find people to fund the film. King Kong cost $207 Million and to me that movie was average but people loved it and it made money. It didn’t deserve an academy award because It wasn’t made for peanuts and it wasn’t groundbreaking.
Lucas states King Kong didn’t make enough money but I don’t agree at all it has grossed over $216 Million in the USA and a total so far of $543 Million in the World. Now this movie isn’t on DVD yet which when it hits will rake in another 50-100 million so I don’t see what Lucas is talking about.
Personally Blockbusters have very little effect on me anymore. There are maybe 2-3 big budget blockbusters that I like each year. I mainly like the Independent films because they have substance, great acting, a good script and so forth. Plus they are made for such a low amount of money that it’s amazing how good the film is. I personally am glad that Independent films dominated the Oscars this year because Crash, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck and several other films nominated there were great and I think they deserved the nominations and the awards.
