Another year, another Halloween season, another Dark Castle production. This year, though, marks a departure for the Castle as it drifts out of Port Remake and into original storytelling waters.
Sean Murphy (played by Garbriel Byrne), captain of the salvage vessel Arctic Warrior, and his crew get a hot tip from a mysterious, soft spoken pilot, John Ferriman (Desmond Harrington), that he’s spotted the long lost Antonia Graza luxury liner adrift off the Alaskan coast.
With the right crew, the liner could be successfully salvaged and brought ashore resulting in a hefty payday. That’s not to say the spirit of William Castle has left the production house founded by Joel Silver, Gil Adler, and Robert Zemeckis to provide yearly big screen chills and thrills.
“Ghost Ship” retains Castle’s penchant for creepy atmosphere, in-your-face shocks, and above all, characters overcome by their desires who rightfully meet their doom - a theme found in the company’s previous gothic haunts Thir13en Ghosts (2001) and House on Haunted Hill (1999). Staying within the Dark Castle coda of creating films intended to feel like a big Halloween party, Ghost Ship, despite its aching flaws that’ll leave you with a hang-over, is an entertaining bash where the spirits get riled up, Italian girls get nekkid, and more than a few bodies hit the floor; it’s plot torn from the pages of various EC Comics (Vault of Horror, Tales from the Crypt)... Missing for more than 40 years, the Antonia Graza is discovered a rotted shell of a ship - a floating haunted house at sea complete with ominous reflections of water dancing on the ship’s interior walls; a unique substitution for the usual flashes of lightning on a dark stormy night in a spooked-out corroding manor. Shortly after boarding the ship, Epps (played by Julianna Margulies) - the Arctic Warrior’s key salvage leader - and Ferriman reveal the Graza’s true treasures: a room full of bodies (the ship’s original passengers), and boxes full of gold (roughly $300 million worth).
Before you can say Treasure of the Sierra Madre, some spooky shit begins to occur around the Warrior’s crew. A little British ghost girl named Katie (Emily Browning) who was hung to death after being discovered alive following the Graza’s massacre contacts Epps.
First mate Greer (Isaiah Washington) is being seduced by a painfully sexy ghost. And even the Captain is having his fair share of spectral encounters. Worse yet, said ghostly girl drops clues that “He” intends to kill all those aboard. Debate quickly erupts amongst the crew: leave the gold and get the hell out of dodge or brave the spooks and tug the Graza to shore?
