Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 film King Kong tells the story of the struggles of a 1930s New York, hit by depression. A group of struggling actors and film-makers, led by director Carl Denham (Jack Black), set off on a voyage to film a movie in Singapore, or so they think. The group soon become entangled in an epic adventure, when they stumble upon an uncharted island and encounter a terrifying undiscovered tribe, various dinosaurs, and most importantly, an oversized gorilla named Kong.
In true Hollywood style, King Kong, initially feared by both the islanders and the adventurers, turns into a loving friend for lead actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) and an animal for the other characters to hunt and exploit. This results in Kong being shipped back to New York to entertain crowds of wealthy theatre-goers. Inevitably, all does not go to plan, as Kong escapes and flees taking Darrow with him. Throughout, Jackson aims here to dazzle the audience with special effects and graphics, rather than to show what the film is really meant to be about, the strong developing emotions between Kong and Darrow and the ruthless ambition of Denham. Admittedly, the effects are impressive, and Jackson’s scenes of 1930s New York are both accurate well shot.
Jackson, does however, seem to fall into Lord of the Rings mode, dragging every scene out until the point of boredom, particularly the fights between Kong and the dinosaurs. Jackson’s film is ninety minutes longer than the original, almost double the running time, but what has he added to the film in reality? Better special effects, a couple more fight scenes, and some arguably pointless extra characters in the ship’s crew, not to mention the fact that it took half an hour for the gorilla to actually die. None of this really adds anything to the story and fans of the original are left wondering whether Jackson would have been better to leave such a classic adventure film well alone. For those who haven’t seen either version, think ‘Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World’ meets ‘Mighty Joe Young’ and you won’t be far wrong. All in all, a must see film, if only to see what all the fuss is about!
