Surprisingly, “Madea’s Family Reunion” is even better than “Diary” and is a perfect mix of comedy and drama.

“Madea’s Family Reunion” is one of nine Tyler Perry plays. “Family Reunion” is the second play that was made into a movie and is overall surprisingly better than the first film “Diary of a Mad Black Woman. In “Family Reunion” Madea is back and has now taken on even more problems. She is assigned to be a foster parent to a young girl (KeKe Palmer) and has to deal with her two nieces Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) and Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) who are both having relationship problems. A very nice mix of drama and comedy ensues

Tyler Perry is truly a god when it comes to African American cinema. When I first seen “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” last year in theaters, I was amazed by the outcome because I never heard of the film before and just took a chance by seeing it. And now after seeing “Family Reunion” which is even better than “Diary” I am becoming a big Tyler Perry fan. I think what makes Tyler Perry’s work so great is the fact that he doesn’t stereotype his characters. Hollywood tends to always portray African Americans in a very negative light and it’s very refreshing to see African Americans in a positive light. I think film critics mainly bash a movie like this because they are uptight white guys who can’t understand why something like this is liked. But me personally I love these films and can’t wait for the next one to arrive next year.

“Family Reunion” is a perfect mix of comedy and drama. With issues of rape and spousal abuse all being touched upon, this movie has you on the verge of tears at one moment but then rolling in the aisles with laugher a few minutes later. The movie is a great dramedy that even makes a great statement at the end by stating be who you are and stop doing what others are doing. Basically, be yourself and have people love you for that.

Tyler Perry who not only writes, directs and produces the film but also stars as the main character Madea along with two minor characters Brain and Joe. Although he has his hands full he does a great job playing every character. He also does a great job directing capturing the real emotion and heartbreak of each character. I would personally love to see one of Perry’s plays live because if he can make a movie this good, I would love to see how great his live plays would me. All of the other characters were great as well including Keke Palmer who played the foster child Nikki and Lynn Whitfield who played the mom Victoria who played that role without breaking a sweat which was amazing. The woman seemed like she didn’t even have a heart at all and was extremely believable. Overall, the acting was very solid and I really enjoyed all the performances.

In conclusion, ignore the critics with this one. They don’t know what they are talking about when it comes to Tyler Perry movies. This movie is definitely one step up from his previous film and I can only hope they continue to get better as they go along. It’s nice to see a filmmaker who wants the world to view African Americans as regular people. Hollywood usually stereotypes them as gangsters and drug dealers in almost every other film, but Perry breaks the routine. This movie can bring tears to your eyes at one moment and then gasping for air from laughter a moment later. I personally hope this film does great at the box office and I hope to see Perry’s last seven plays made into films as well. I highly recommend this film.
MovieManMenzel’s final rating for “Madea’s Family Reunion” is an 8/10.
