So far the film Borat has been a huge success in the United States. I saw the film and I thought it was good but nothing that spectacular like critics are making it out to be. But with that being said it seems that the film may in fact been banned from Russia. Why you may ask? Well because people are afraid that the film will fear the country’s neighbor which is Kazakhstan which is where Borat “supposedly” hails from. If this film does get banned it willl be the first feature film to ever be banned in Russia. The main problem is the political ties Russia has with Kazakhstan but I don’t get why showing a film that basically makes fun to of the United States would be offensive to Kazakhstan unless they find Borat himself a repulsive negative stereotype.
It has been said that Russia’s Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography have told 20th Century Fox that it will now allow the film to be shown because of its offensive material. Vadim Ivanov of 20th Cenury Fox confirms that the agency does not want to show the film because it can offend some viewers. Russian Authorizes have been trying to follow a zero tolerance policy on racial intolerance and if Borat gets banned I guess this proves that the authorizes will in fact control the content.
