Even though the film The Hobbit hasn't even begun filming yet I feel we have heard so much about it with all the rumors involving Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema. Well today the New Line Co-chairman Bob Shaye has officially confirmed the decision, that Peter Jackson will not under any circumstances direct or have anything to do with The Hobbit prequel.
In a recent interview, Shaye stated that hiring Jackson to work on The Hobbit “will never happen during my watch” He continued by saying that Peter Jackson received "a quarter of a billion dollars paid to him so far, justifiably, according to contract, completely right, and this guy ... turns around without wanting to have a discussion with us and sues us and refused to discuss it unless we just give in to his plan. ... I don't want to work with that guy anymore." And if there is any truth to this I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t want anything to do with Peter Jackson myself especially if I gave him a quarter of a billion dollars and he’s trying to sue me for more. I always thought Peter Jackson looked a little shady but hey how do I know that Shaye is telling the truth here either.
After hearing this interview, Jackson spoke on his behalf saying that he tried to discuss the issues with New Line Cinema for about a year but the studio was not at all cooperative. However he does not state anything about the contract or the fact that they paid him a quarter of a billion dollars which means that maybe there is some truth to the Shaye interview and it should be way Shaye emphasized: "He will never make any movie with New Line Cinema again while I'm still working at the company." In any case I am not sure if we will ever know the truth so pick your sides now and just stay with them because I doubt this legal battle will ever come to a close.
