Steven Spielberg’s most recent release, Munich, is loosely based on the events of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where eleven Israeli athletes were held hostage and eventually murdered by the Arab ‘Black September’ terrorist group. The title of the film is fairly misleading as Spielberg does little to set the scene or build up tension at the Munich Olympic Village. He moves quickly on to the revenge of the Israelis in sending a party of unknown and ill-qualified assassins to kill the men behind the attack, a mission that would take them all over Europe. For those who are unaware of the politics behind the Munich terrorist attacks, little motivation is demonstrated by Spielberg, the attack appears to be purely vicious. In fact, the main focus of the film does not appear to be the political situation, but a general tale of terrorism and revenge, which could have been made entirely fictional rather than based on the tragedy of the Munich Olympics.
The film stars Eric Bana as a loving family man turned amateur assassin, coerced into embarking on the mission by a large sum of money. Abandoning his pregnant wife he set about tracking down the terrorists accompanied by a small group of men including our future James Bond, Daniel Craig. The story follows their assassinations and the problems they encounter along the way. The mission is, however, difficult to follow as many of the characters are not well developed and it is difficult to work out who some of the characters are and why they are involved. Regardless of this, the acting is superb and the way the Israeli assassins are portrayed as becoming disillusioned with their mission adds further depth to the film, resulting in what is, in effect, a battle between governing bodies alone.
The film concludes with the ultimate failure of the assassins as three are murdered and they only succeed in killing seven of the eleven terrorists. However, the message of the film makes it clear that no matter how much revenge you take, people will always be replaced and fighting will continue. Despite some rather bizarre scenes, evidently used to shock, but which were actually quite strange and amusing, and a lack of historical accuracy or attention to the actual events to Munich, Spielberg’s dramatic version of events is both entertaining and realistic. However, give it a miss if you have a short attention span, as it’s difficult to keep up with the story!
