Netflix Beats the Big Boys

Despite some goliath competition, the online DVD renter Netflix remains the frontrunner in its field with more than one million subscribers. Video Store magazine reported today (Friday) that Netflix has not only managed to hold off competition from smaller upstarts but from such established powerhouses as Wal-Mart and Blockbuster. Citing industry estimates, the trade publication said that Wal-Mart has managed to sign up just 7,000 subscribers since it launched an online DVD rental site of its own last October, which charges $1.00 a month less for its subscriptions than Netflix. Blockbuster, which rents DVDs via filmcaddy.com for the same subscription rate as Netflix ($20.00 per month), has not disclosed its subscriber count.
