Spielberg being sued???

Well it seems that the producers of the television series Into the West are being sued. This series which was created by Steven Spielberg is being sued by a Mescalero Apache family from New Mexico who claim that a stylist violated tribal customs by cutting an 8 year old girl’s hair. The lawsuit was filed in Albuquerque's US District Court on March 6, 2006 for the amount of $250,000 for emotional distress and another $75,000 for damages. This lawsuit was filed by the girl’s father Danny Ponce. The father states the stylist company cut his daughters hair to make her look like a male because the casting for the mini-series had failed to find enough young male actors to play all the roles. Why is this such a big deal you may ask? Well Mescalero families traditionally grow their daughters hair so it is waist length for their Coming of Age Ceremony. Furthermore according to the culture, if this was to happen it could be done by the parents only and on top of it nobody asked for permission before cutting her hair. The girls father Ponce says that his little girl now looks like a boy and states that just because someone is wealthy doesn’t give them the right to do something without checking first. Good point indeed. Should be interesting to see where this ends up in a few weeks.
