“Stick it” does have its moments here and there however as a whole it just drags on and on to a point where it becomes extremely dull, repetitive, and boring.

A rebellious teen named Haley (Missy Peregrym) has a run in with the law and is court ordered to either go to a juvenile delinquent center or to the VGA in Houston, TX. Haley picks to attend the juvenile center however gets sent off to the VGA instead. At the VGA, Haley runs into members of her past who are angered by the fact that Haley, a few years ago, dropped out of the gymnastic competition which caused the entire team to miss out on their chance to be in the Olympics. Now under the supervision of Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges), Haley has another chance to prove to everyone that doesn't believe in her that she has what it takes to stick it to everyone who has ever doubted her. A long and repetitive film ensues…

I really wanted to like “Stick it” even though everything I saw and heard about the film was negative. The trailers and television spots were awful and the reviews for this movie were mediocre at best. However since I always have to see films for myself in order to judge them (I rarely judge a book by its cover), I finally went to see “Stick it” this afternoon and sadly all the bad reviews and bad marketing were right because “Stick it” really had nothing to offer.

“Stick it” starts off with a bunch of kids doing stunts on their bikes and the next thing you know a bike goes through a window and the main girl Haley is running from the police. This is the same old tale we have seen before, a teen that is rebelling against her parents and society gets in trouble but then we the audience find out there is more to Haley than meets the eye. This is when we find out that Haley is actually good at gymnastics and because of an issue that happened in the past she no longer wants to take part in anything that has to do with gymnastics. And since it’s the same old tale, I am sure most can guess what happens next.

The main problem with “Stick it” is that the film really doesn’t have any substance to it. The reason why Haley is rebelling is really not a good one nor is the issue ever fully addressed. Also I hate to say it but Haley really isn’t a likeable character until the very end and even then she isn’t great. The character Haley was actually the exact same character Eliza Dushku played in “Bring it On” although unlike Haley her character was likeable early on and I think the audience could relate to her better than Haley.

Another thing about this film was it didn’t go anywhere. It was like watching the same damn thing over and over again for almost 2 hours. They show the girls mocking each other and then Haley getting mad and walking away. Then they show Haley training. I mean this movie had four or five main scenes that just kept repeating over and over again. The final tournament was the only good part of the film but even that seemed to go on a little too long. The characters never fully develop and everyone was unlikable and stupid. The only decent character in the entire film was Burt played by Jeff Bridges who I must admit looked very out of place in this film but he was the only member of the cast I actually really liked and did a good job throughout the entire film.

There are some things about the movie that work however they never offset the things that don’t. I personally didn’t laugh once during this movie even though it’s marketed as a comedy. It’s just not funny. Two girls mocking each other or pretending they are talking on the phone isn’t funny, it’s dumb. Fart jokes again not funny. “Stick it” is not a good comedy and it’s not a good drama either. To be honest, it’s hard to say what it is really because it tries to be funny but fails, it tries to add drama too but it fails as well. I think it’s more of a movie for those who do gymnastics and that’s all because for everyone else it’s just a below average very drawn out film that doesn’t seem to really have a goal.

So in conclusion, I sadly can’t think of anything I really liked about “Stick it” besides Jeff Bridges’ character and the final competition. Overall, this film is just very blah. Not much really happens in “Stick it” and that’s the big problem. What makes it worse is that when the film has a scene that actually works or seems like it will add substance to the film, after a few minutes it becomes boring yet again. I remember half way through the film I said to myself this film is really boring and the reason why is that nothing really happens.

The director and writer Jessica Bendinger should not be writing scripts alone because she has written 5 screenplays all of which have been very mediocre. I really wonder who green lights these films. I guess I can see “Stick it” as a made for TV movie however not a mainstream release because it just isn’t good enough for theaters because it lacks so much. With that being said, I can’t recommend this film unless you’re really into gymnastics because if your not it has nothing new to offer and you will just find yourself sitting there bored for 2 hours.

MovieManMenzel’s final rating for “Stick It” is a 2/5. It’s has its moments however as a whole the movie fails because the film just seems boring and repetitive.
