We have all seen the British horrors that just don't compare to the US versions with a double case of bad acting and bad directing putting the 'Brit Horror' film class to shame.
Seeing this film, I didn't have my hopes high, as like other British horror films, I thought the Descent would bomb, be forgotten in a month and be on Sky Movies every 3 days to fill slots. Unfortunately this is true, with Sky playing films like Dog Soldiers which is simply not appealing.
However, British horror films have taken a small swing to our credit. Films like Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later have brought the genre back to life. I must also recommend Dead Man's Shoes. The film is a cracker even if it may be low budget.
However, back to the Descent. Fans of Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers have been eagerly anticipating for his next film. I wasn't as confident. But what a change around from his perspective. The result is extremely enjoyable and could easily be one of the scariest movies of the year.
The film stars Shauna MacDonald as Sarah, who has gone through a horrendous car crash where her young child and husband died in and is then haunted by flashbacks and hallucinations of the daughter. After a year of suffering she decides to get back with an old friend who has planned a expedition to go down a hole in the earth, unknowing the horror which lies beneath. Then Sarah is embroiled with the other 5 girls in a labrynth 2 miles underground with no way of getting out, and not to mention being chased by human mutants who are following their every move.
Performances especially by Natalie Mendoza give a fantastic mirror view of Marshall's view of the characters for the film. Mendoza goes into Lucy Lui territory. With usual horror films, and with 6 women underground you would expect the usual screaming woman antic where they end up getting killed. However, Marshall always has us on edge to what's going to happen to the characters. However, like predicted, 1 girl lives at the end which is the main character.
My verdict on this film is that it is a big step up from Marshall's Dog Soldiers with a good unknown cast getting into character fantastically for the film. The only real down side of the film really is the poor CGI effects on the bats coming out of the cave which would put any high budget film look down in shame on it. This is a good film to see, if you like you usual horror films and another Brit film, this is a must see for you. A bold and professional statement that British horror is not dead, but lays dorment for now.
