The film didn't suck that much but it still sucked a little

"Thumbsucker" is a movie about a kid named Justin Cobb (Lou Pucci) who has a bad habit of still sucking on his thumb. The movie goes on to show Justin as he tries to change his thumb sucking ways and turn into a normal 17 year old. But what is normal anyway?

When I walked out of "Thumbsucker" I really didn't know what to think about it. I thought about it for the rest of the night and still didn't really know what to think. The movie while it was very entertaining seemed like it was missing something. I just didn't get much of substance out of the movie and I understand the whole be yourself idea that many say is the point of it. I just didn't feel the movie was complete and about half way through I started to ask myself where is this film going because I couldn't see an end in sight and when it did end I felt the film just ended because the director didn't know how to end the film. It's another film with that whole create your own ending and I am going to have to start saying that it's beginning to be a cop-out for screenwriters who don't know how to end their film.

The best thing about the film would have to be the acting. Lou Cobb who played the main character Justin did a fine job playing his role and seemed very believable. Also Tilda Swinton who played Justin's mom Audrey did a great job and delivered a very emotional and believable performance. Keanu Reeves played a crazy doctor who was very funny and hippie like. Kelli Garner who played Justin's girlfriend in the film was also very good as the concerned yet uncaring girlfriend Rebecca. And finally we have Vince Vaughn who plays a really air headed debate team professor named Mr. Geary. He's amusing at times but it's hard for Vince Vaughn to not play his normal funny guy role.

The script was decent like I said earlier but I still felt it was missing something. I really didn't get a lot of the scenes and some of this movie was just a little too unbelievable. I mean the part where Mr. Geary allows Justin to sleep in the same room as the girls on the debate team, and then buys them booze is just a little too far fetched then add that to the fact that 4 people got so drunk off a six pack; well it doesn't make any sense. Also the added sex scenes were also very unnecessary and didn't really serve a purpose and lastly like I said earlier the ending made me feel cheated.

In the end, I know I sound like I am really bad mouthing this film but it was a decent film. It may take more than one viewing to really appreciate it and I will watch it again when it's released on DVD. While it may not be the most believable or meaningful film, the movie still holds your interest and is entertaining for the most part. The acting is pretty much the best element of the movie and some of the script is very good in some parts. I recommend this film as a matinée or a rental.
