I have had much anticipation for this film ever since it was known that the film was being remade from the classic War of the Worlds in 1953.

The impact of the basic science fiction book which was inspired by Orsen Wells was always going to excite people as in this day and age we have more technology and better quality equipment to better the original in 1953.

To briefly go through the film, Tom Cruise is a torn apart dad who has no idea about his children or how to raise children. With catastrophic events occuring all over the world with machines which have been buried for hundreds of thousands of years coming back to life to launch a final attack and exterminate the human race. Cruise is torn between being a dad in a hurry and trying to save the world (that old chessnut).

I expected a strong cast by the likes of Gene Barry, Ann Robinson and Les Tremayne who were some of the original stars in the original motion picture. With Steven Spielberg directing and fantastic Tom Cruise taking control of the film, you expect the best for what you pay for. Oh how it disappoints.

Cruise's character is based on a bad father who has to come to terms that he must protect his children from an all out invasion. However, like the film, his character goes round in circles, with Cruise not knowing what to do with the character at times. His efforts to save his children and the world pan out like usual. He becomes the only person to take down at 500ft killing machine while the military do absolutely abysmal yet Cruise can take down a much more advanced machine which is killing people as it sees them? It's not likely, yet Speilberg has taken the usual route of making everything pan out for the best which he usually doesn't attract himself too, which makes it quite depressing to see a great director take the same route at other poor, singleminded directors.

As expected, while half of the worlds population has been wiped out by this alien race, Cruise his daughter and son and also the mother and boyfriend all manage to stay alive yet the obvious destruction.

An hour and a half of just pure destruction and no up lifting scenes make the film monotonous with the audience becoming bored with the continual onslaught. However, the audience is given a break but at the last 10 minutes at the film when it actually ends. A poor ending to a relatively poor film. Making the humans seem absolutely helpless against such beings but the microbes in the air eventually killing the alien beings.

However, the film while it was poor in a lot of senses, the huge ammount of money provided did come in some use. (No not the £40 million given to Cruise), but on the special effects. Everything in the film seemed to come to life, even though a poor script and a casting nightmare put it down. I expected the very best from this film in terms of SFX, and I got exactly that.

My Verdict: A poor remake to the original sci-fi classic, with a lack of edge and lack of professional charisma in the characters let the film down oh so much. However, the SFX make up for the poor remake, to take some credibility and Spielberg and Cruise only walking off with their tails between their legs, which is a relief to say the least.
