Gay (Homosexuality) - The facts With 1 in 10 people said to be gay/bisexual these days its about time people new the facts...

What is being gay?

A simple question some of you might think but some people don't know! Most people will experience "feelings" or an attraction to someone of the same sex in their lifetime, but for some people these feelings don't go away. this is called homosexuality or being gay.

The basics

There is nothing wrong with being gay or even fancying someone of the same sex, a lot of people do grow out of these feelings. At first you may feel a freak or weird and you may be worried what other people will think of you... especially your family. most people are fine if you decide to tell them your gay though it is a good idea to be 100% certain that you are actually gay before you come out. coming out is the term used when people decided to tell there friends and family they are gay. But do make sure you feel comfortable telling people because some NOT ALL PEOPLE can react negatively, this is called homophobia. this can result in physical of verbal abuse just for being gay. these people don't understand that its not what u go for sexually that makes a person, they don't understand what being gay is all about.

most people think its just about sticking things in weird places but its not. Being gay is a pass to the biggest world wide organization and gays and lesbians tend to get on very well and be friendlier people in general and it gives u a huge sense of identity and togetherness. as for the sex side of things, there is more to life than just anal sex and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. if you don't feel comfortable with it then you don't have to do it! and remember just because a person is gay it doesn't mean they are going to catch aids, though safe sex is very important, see the safe sex section for more info.

If a friend decides to come out to you, please be supportive to them, they had guts to do it, and the least you could do is support them and understand that they are still your mate no matter what. you still hung round with them before you knew so why should things change, and also don't assume that just 'cos they said they are gay that they fancy you because that is a myth some guy on an ego trip made up!

the legal age for consent for gay sex is 16 just like it is for straight people.
