Brain power as well as girl power with WAGs

It is perhaps the wackiest government proposition of all time...Today, the wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of top English footballers are being hailed as the best role models for young girls.
Now, you might think the air-headed gang are good for nothing apart from shoe shopping and champagne-supping, but you'd be wrong. A big, red cross for you there. Under their bottle blonde/brown/black hair there is apparently some brain power for us all to learn from. They're not just pretty faces!
The Learning and Skills Council have picked the unlikely ladies to promote intellectual self-development after finding that most, if not all of the WAG's have further qualifications.
Coleen McLoughlin, fiancée of striker Wayne Rooney, has 10 GCSEs including an A* in performing arts. Lisa Roughead, the wife of midfielder Michael Carrick, has a shiny business degree. Charlotte Meares, the girlfriend of Jermain Defoe, has three A-levels. And so does Melanie Slade, the gal with the young striker Theo Walcott. And even those Wags who dropped out of education earlier had the sense to gain at least a minimum set of qualifications. The LSC campaign is designed to make this side of the Wags story known.
The LSC study says that, rather than idealising the WAGs' glamorous lifestyles, teenagers should realise that most of them had the sense to gain at least a minimum set of qualifications.
The report explains: "While Victoria Beckham has succeeded with a handful of GCSEs, the odds of following in her footsteps are incredibly thin. The chances of being in a successful girl band or winning The X Factor are less than one in 200,000."
