Legendary rock band Queen have kicked off their first tour since the death of music legend Freddie Mercury who died in 1991 from Aids. The band are hoping the strenghts of their songs will make up for the abscence of their magical front-man.
Two of the original band members,Brian May on guitar and Rodger Taylor on drums were strutting their stuff at Brixton Academy , South London, late on Monday Night.
They were accompied by Paul Rodgers, the man who will fill the shoes of Freddie Mercury.
The crowd of 4,700 did not mind that Freddie's place had been filled as they rocked to such Queen classics as " I want to break free" and "We Will Rock You". They finished the show with a heart felt rendition of " We are the Champions".
Although the surviving members of Queen have played in concerts since Freddie's death, including a concert earlier this month in South Africa, they have not been on tour since their huge 100,000 crowd at Knebworth in 1986.
In respect for Freddie the tour has been called Queen + Paul Rodgers.
Brian May said this after his first show on Monday ; "I was always against the idea of putting someone in there trying to impersonate Freddie in any way,"
"Then suddenly I'm looking at this guy who doesn't in any sense try to take the place of Freddie."
Queen will not be the first band to try to resurrect itself after the death of its most famous member.
America's The Doors attempted it after Jim Morrison died of heart failure in 1971 and Australian group INXS has said it will seek a replacement for Michael Hutchence, found dead in a hotel room in 1997, via a reality television series.
What are views on Queen going on tour? DO you think the show must go on without Freddie?
