Prince gives it away

We're all used to the modern dilemma of downloads vs CDs, but old rocker Prince has taken things in a different direction – by giving away his new album Planet Earth with copies of the Mail on Sunday newspaper.
The singer's bound to be happy as the deal will have made him £250,000 or so, but not everyone's pleased – retailers have called it an "insult" to record stores, although HMV decided to stock the paper. Meanwhile Prince's label Sony BMG has pulled plans to release the album in the UK.
Prince has explained why he did it: "It's direct marketing and I don't have to be in the speculation business of the record industry which is going through a lot of tumultuous times right now." The Mail on Sunday's editor Peter Wright added,"Prince has done this because he makes most of his money these days as a performing artist. He's got a fantastic series of concerts coming up at the O2 Dome and this is a way of telling people what he's doing."
We'll have to wait and see who jumps on this new bandwagon next…
