The gloves are off on The X Factor, as the feud between Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh spirals out of control. Viewers endured almost continual sniping between the three judges on Saturday night’s show. Afterwards, Louis had an almighty bust-up with Simon backstage because he was forced to vote off a contestant live on air. He and Sharon were stunned when presenter Kate Thornton told them to choose between singer Roberta Howett and girl group Voices With Soul.
“We never agreed to do this. This is not in my contract,” fumed the Westlife manager, who’s managing the groups. “Sharon said she’d rather be fired than be put in that position again. And if they ask me to do it, I will walk off the show live.” As well as being a judge, Simon owns the rights to the ITV show – and the company which produces it. He had the casting vote on Saturday and booted off 23-year-old Roberta, who was managed by Sharon.
Simon sniped at the wannabe songstress, asking: "Is this girl a star or someone who should be in a hotel?", prompting Sharon to retort: "Maybe someone you'd like to see in your hotel bedroom." Sharon and Simon have been embroiled in a feud ever since he slated her daughter Kelly’s pop career and accused her husband Ozzy of setting up his near-fatal quad bike accident for publicity.
It’s just the latest round in a foul-mouthed war of words that has raged since the show’s inception, but one thing’s for sure – the much-publicised feud isn’t harming viewing figures. The early evening show pulled in 6.7 million viewers, beating the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing into submission.
